Hello LUUN! *Latest Features*


Hello!

In this initial devlog I will go over a few things to get you oriented on the current status of the game. I will talk about the current feature set, the missing features, known bugs, and upcoming development.

To keep up with the very latest, head over the Trello Roadmap. It will have the most up to date information on development from day to day.  It gives a great overview of what is going on right now and what is coming up.

highly recommend using the itch.io Desktop App to download, manage and play the game.  I update very frequently... the itch.io App will make sure you have the latest build of the game, with updates normally taking just a few seconds.

Current Features

At the start, LUUN is set up as a playground for scavenging, sailing and exploring. Generate a large island archipelago... the world in LUUN is currently ~14km x 14km and 30 to 40 islands. 

Explore abandoned island villages for resources. Harvest most plants and objects for edible and useful materials. Find and read Books to gain knowledge and learn Crafting Recipes.  

Crafting is currently quite limited, but will quickly expand as I add upcoming crafting stations such as the Indoor Stove, Primitive Mill, Primitive Loom and Primitive Boatyard.

Obvious Missing Features

Gameplay Features such as Tools, Tool harvesting, and Building are staples in nearly all survival games and are being polished right now. Initially the tools will include Hand Torch and Harvest Axe. Other tools and weapons are being developed, including tools for hunting and fishing.  Building will allow construction of pretty much anything you run into on the islands, assuming you have learned the Recipe for making it.

The comfort/rest/energy system implementation is very rudimentary at the moment and does not affect gameplay. These systems will come online once the Building system is fully implemented.

Distant Island Proxies do not match the actual loaded island: the current proxies are temporary placeholders until I build a LOD generation system for the islands. The World Map will come online about the same time as the proxies as they are based on the same rasterizer tech.

Weather state currently does not save. Time of day saves properly, though.

Ground harvestable state does not save. Leaving and returning to an island will respawn resources. [Edit: Fixed, harvestable state now saves]

There are many more features being worked on, the Roadmap on Trello outlines the current progress and what's coming up next.

Known Bugs

I have been fighting with an intermittent nasty crash bug that has to do with the save system and inventory saving. If you run into a way to reproduce this crash I would greatly appreciate a bug report!   [Edit: Found and fixed.]

Other bugs include odd issues with the movement of items between inventories... these are problems I am addressing with an overhaul of the inventory/item system to make it easier to find and fix these issues. 

Crafting at the Cook Fire can sometimes not allow more items to be crafted after switching recipes. Still trying to find a way to reproduce this consistently.

Player can push the raft while it's moving from certain positions. Fixing this may require some Unreal source code modification, so I may push the fix off until the Unreal 5 migration unless I find a better solution.

Boats can spawn within the ground. The solution is a better system for handling the physics state of spawned objects. This is on the list of systems to address.

Player can sometimes spawn within/below terrain. This can happen when the terrain collision is slow to initialize. I am working on solutions to this problem.
